Congratulations to the winners of and nominees for the 2022 Waste Sorted Awards. The wet weather could not dampen the mood of the Awards attendees as the waste industry gathered for the annual Waste Sorted Awards on Thursday, 19 May. The Awards celebrate some of the amazing achievements of the waste industry.

Some of those recognised at the awards were:

  • Regional Waste Award winner – the Shire of East Pilbara for their fantastic initiatives to reduce contamination in their recycling, the approaches they used included bin tagging and developing a range of resources in local language.  They reduce their kerbside recycling contamination rate from 80% to 7%.
  • Local Government Award winners – the Western Metropolitan Regional Council and Resource Recovery Group for their GREAT Games and School Waste Education Day, providing fun and effective ways to engage the community.  Highly commended for this category were the City of Albany for their five star FOGO implementation.
  • Waste Avoidance (Events) Award winner the Town of East Fremantle for the George Street Festival.
  • Waste Initiative of the Year winner – City of Wanneroo for their Talking my Language Project, a multilingual education toolkit to help CALD communities understand waste sorting and services.
  • Waste Innovation Award winner – Town of Cambridge E-waste drop off days, delivered in partnership with Total Green Recycling and ParaQuad industries, which helps to divert electronic waste for reuse, repair and recycling.

Last but by no means least, WALGA Preferred Supplier Workpower scored a double whammy taking out best Waste Team and winning the overall Waste Award for 2022.  Workpower’s team is a 120 person crew, employing people with and without disability, which diverts over 15,600 tonnes of waste from landfill and is involved in a huge range of initiatives from reuse shops to recycling hair salon waste.
