The State Government has released its preferred approach for regulating Short Term Rental Accommodation (STRA) in Western Australia. This includes a state-wide registration scheme for all STRA properties and changes to the planning system outlines in Position Statement: Planning for Tourism and Short-term Rental Accommodation. Further details on the Government's response are here.

WALGA has long advocated for a state-wide register and contemporary planning rules for STRA, importantly no STRA will be able register under the new scheme without the necessary development approvals in place. WALGA continues to concern about how the 90-day exemption for un-hosted STRA will work in practice. WALGA's media release in response to the initiatives can be viewed here.

Information Session
WALGA is hosting an online Local Government Officer Information Session with the Department of Mines, Industry Regulations and Safety on Tuesday, 21 November, 1:30pm - 3pm to discuss the key elements of the proposed registration scheme. If you are interested in attending, please register here.

Officers of the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage (DPLH) will be in attendance to discuss the interaction between the planning system and the registration scheme. We anticipate holding another information session in the new year with the DPLH once the draft changes to the LPS Regulations are finalised.
